About Us

Stone Cellar Farms was brought to life in 2019 when Jason and Rachel Fenske bought an abandoned farm with an old stone root cellar and land full of overgrown cedar trees. Hence, the name Stone Cellar Farms! We have worked very hard over the past years to improve this land.  You may have seen us at farmers markets selling our vegetables grown on the farm, baked goods and talking about our apiary, that we still have. I have always been obsessed with growing things and improving soil and grass over the years. We are so excited to expand our family business’ and provide you with exceptional customer service.

30 years ago, as a teenager in high school, I had my first lawn mowing business during the summer.  Back then my success was tied to a secondhand set of mowers, a weed eater that my Dad gave me and the willingness to work hard in the heat.  Working those summers, I found a true love not only with mowing but in the details of taking care of a lawn.  Like most kids I went off to college in search of bigger and better things.  But growing things has always been a passion.

Many years ago, our family moved into a very nice neighborhood in Wichita, and the yard was perfect. I still remember mowing it for the first time and being in awe! But less than a week in the lawn started to die.  I was doing everything by the books, setting everything up like K-State said to, but the yard was still dying.

In a twist of fate this led to an obsession that opened my eyes to a more sustainable turf management program that everyone can use.  The prior owners had fertilized heavily and watered even more.  Every time a lawn disease occurred, they treated with chemicals and used broad spectrum herbicides constantly.  Being on city water, with no well, neighbors later told me that the old occupants regularly complained about water bills that were more than $600 per month pre-covid!  With all of that said, while the lawn looked great on top, the grass and soil weren't very healthy.  I really wanted that lawn back but paying $600 a month all summer long in water bills was out of the question.  Over the next two years, by using water saving technology, soil test-based adjustments and organics, I was able to get the lawn back to where it was and even better.  Our peak heat water bills were reduced to a couple hundred dollars a month, and much less for most of the season.

Back then I was just happy to have a great looking lawn.  Today though with permanent water restrictions in place and the increased frequency of drought those lessons learned are more important than ever and I am passionate about helping your lawn thrive.   We are happy to just mow your yard or work with you to create a custom plan that is tailored to your yards needs to achieve that gorgeous lawn you want and be eco-friendly.  Over the years we have worked farmers markets selling vegetables grown on our farm and working with bees.  All these lessons learned go into our turf management program.  Our goal is to provide you with an organically healthy, beautiful lawn that uses as little water and chemicals as possible.  Our office is located inside The Fenske Agency, Inc, next door to Livingston’s Diner at 21st and Webb. We look forward to meeting you!
